If you’re in Class 10, well not just class 10, class 12, even junior classes, in general as well. If you are going to appear for other exams where English is the main subject then this video is for you. Because see here’s the truth: the students who write the best essays aren’t always the ones who study the hardest. They’re the ones who read smartly—every single day.

So to improve your vocabulary, strengthen your English, and collect real-life examples for essay writing, you should read a balanced mix of these things:

1. First is English Newspapers (Student Editions)

These improve vocabulary, grammar, and general awareness, obviously. Look for:

  • The Hindu – Student Edition
  • The Times of India – NIE (Newspaper in Education) and
  • The Indian Express – School Corner

Focus on: Editorials, opinion columns, and articles about social issues, so that you can use them in your essays as examples.

2. Read English Magazines-

These are easier to read and are filled with real-life examples. Like you can go for,

  • Reader’s Digest – For vocabulary, idioms, and human-interest stories
  • BBC Learning English – For grammar, listening, and short real-world stories
  • The Week (Junior/Student Editions) – It covers news + real-life events in a very student-friendly tone. So yeah try them, I am sure you will find them helpful.

3. Read Books (Fiction & Non-fiction)

  • Fiction: Improves language flow, expression, and creativity
  • TryThe Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, or To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, or Animal Farm by George Orwell, Animal Farm I have read it and it’s my personal recommendation.
  • Then you can read Non-fiction also: it will give you real-life understandings, examples, and will improve your vocabulary.
  • TryWings of Fire by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam or I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai.

4. Watch on Online Platforms & Videos

  • Ted-Ed & TED Talks (with subtitles) – Learn how to frame arguments and use global examples.
  • Quora or Medium (Student-friendly posts) – They offer opinions, debates, and real-world stories.
  • Then you can watch YouTube Channels like BBC Learning English or Study IQ – For real-life issue breakdowns.
  • And you can also follow Beauty of Language for regular updates on English and vocabulary!!

5. Read Classics from NCERT Supplementary Readers

  • Stories from “Footprints Without Feet” and “First Flight”. They include moral, social, and real-world ideas that can be referenced in essays. They have some really good stories!!

Now time for Quick Tips:

  • Keep a vocabulary journal. I know you must be thinking that abhi ke time me ye sab kaun karta hai, main phone ke notes me na likh lu. But trust me studying the old way still helps and works wonders!!
  • Note down the phrases, idioms, and examples you like
  • And if you are too tech-savvy, then use a dictionary app (like Oxford Learner’s or Merriam-Webster)
